A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
